Movies 357 - PortoMedia

Increase the competition in the movie distribution business by one.
An Irish company called PortoMedia has created a movie distribution model that involves downloading movies onto a flash memory card. The films will be downloaded from kiosks set up at shopping centers and in other public places, and can either be rented or purchased with the use of a PIN number.
PortoMedia said they conducted a trial run in 2007 and will launch a similar trial in 4 American cities in early 2008, although they did not reveal which for. PortoMedia states that they have lined up support from “major studios,” though they did not say which ones or how many.
Should PortoMedia become popular, it will face competition from Netflix and other mail-order services, video on demand, and various online-to-TV models including Apple TV and the upcoming Netflix/LG set-top box.
